If it ain't Baroque…
Despite being the erstwhile digital marketing intern at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Jenn German does not like Mozart. Beethoven could’ve totally beaten him up. Also she has a masters degree in arts management from American University, but this changes nothing.
This blog was created as part of Jenn’s capstone portfolio for grad school, in conjunction with her 2009-2010 internship at the BSO. Its original mission was to promote the BSO and develop its audience while engaging people in discourse and dialogue regarding classical music in general. Since then, it has expanded its reach to include other organizations and even (on rare occasions) other music genres. But not much. Let’s not make a habit of it.

Oh. Well, apparently people want to know more about me. Really. True story! So here are some things about me, as they occur to me. If there’s anything in particular you want to know, leave me a comment and I shall enlighten you.
- My name is Jenn German. Don’t call me Jennifer unless you’re my parents or you’re mad at me. If you’re my parents AND you’re mad at me, well, I’m mad that you named me Jennifer. So there!
- My birthday is December 26. I’m mad about that too.
- I have absolutely spectacular parents except for those two points. It is largely thanks to my mother that I love classical music. She has a masters degree in music from American University. Do not play popular music around her unless you feel like a lecture on how talentless hacks make big money and all the real musicians are ignored.
- I’m not quite so narrow-minded (I kid ’cause I love, Mom!) — I branch out into other genres, especially in the car and at the gym. Jump, Little Children and Jukebox the Ghost are good bands; on Rock Band, I KILL Boston’s “More Than a Feeling” AND I can so do all the runs in Guns ‘N Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine” so bring it!
- I played the piano from kindergarten through third grade, but quit that in fourth grade to pursue the violin. I dropkicked that in favor of the cello my sophomore year of college, but now I dabble in both. Mostly I play the cello because the violin makes me want to beat my head against a wall (except my hero Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg makes me want to play the violin again; I’m so conflicted!).
- I got my undergraduate degree in Humanities with a minor in music from Washington College. The music history professor there was Dr. Parcell, and he was a fount of unintended hilarity. (“Where are my German scholars?” will forever be a running joke.) He wears excellent bow ties.
- I also take ballet. I am not bad, but I’m not about to audition for So You Think You Can Dance, that’s for sure. Mostly ballet has broadened my knowledge of classical music through its scores. Put your musician children in ballet now! Do it! Hell yes these are my feet.
- My brother is a student at Peabody. He is a violist. Ha ha!
- I used to work at Medieval Times. I was a serving wench, I had a corset, you have ten seconds to laugh and get it out of your system, okay you’re done now. Tip your waitress!
- I formerly worked for the Humane Society of the United States. Because if anything is as awesome as music, it’s animals. And that’s a fact you can put in your pipe and take to the bank. My apartment building doesn’t allow dogs (sad face), but it does allow cats (yay!). These are my kitties, Ruffian and Minx. They rock my socks twelve ways to next Tuesday.
- I currently work for Strathmore, a super-awesome arts center just outside D.C. Come visit — we have art galleries and concerts and music and dance!
- I ❤ my super-sexy 250 GB xbox 360. And above all, I ❤ Dragon Age. And above that, I ❤ Alistair (see above).
- I am in love with Walt Disney World. I have accumulated vast amounts of information about it in my brain the way I never did about anything in school. If I could get paid to take people down there and arrange everything for them, I would take that job in ten seconds flat. Heck, if you want me to plan your trip, I’ll do it. You don’t even have to bring me, that’s how much I love it.

Like your site. Despite the fact that you don’t like Mozart you seem ok to me 😉 I’ll follow you on twitter, I’m posting there about classical music too, although in Dutch. If I’m catching up with more followers I might switch to English, we’ll see 😉
